How is Pilates different from other forms of exercise?
Pilates exercise focuses on postural symmetry, abdominal and spine stabilization and mobilization, mind/body control, and strengthening through a complete range of motion of all joints. It can be done on a mat or on the different pieces of Pilates equipment.
Who can do Pilates?
At All Wellness we really are about all ages, all bodies, and all abilities.** We have clients in their early twenties all the way into their eighties. The equipment is versatile, so any of the exercises can be modified for success. And yes, Pilates is great for men. Many of our male clients are hooked!
**Sometimes people come to us with injuries or pain. These clients are usually recommended to begin with a few sessions of Physical Therapy or Privates before they are safe to enter a group class. Our PT’s are also Pilates instructors, so you’ll still be using the Pilates equipment and exercises!
What should I expect when I first arrive at All Wellness?
When you first come to All Wellness you will be welcomed at the front desk where one of the staff members will show you around the studio. We suggest you arrive about 15 minutes early to fill out the brief, but necessary paperwork, which includes a health history. Often we provide food tastings, tea during the cold months, and spring water.
What should I wear to Pilates?
Plan to wear clothing that allows you to move and stretch fully. Because the instructor will need to see your alignment and how your muscles are engaging, you will want to avoid clothes that are too baggy. Most people prefer to do Pilates barefoot, but you may also wear socks that have a non-slip sole (we sell ToeSox for your convenience).
Is there a place for me to change my clothes?
Yes. There is a common changing area and restrooms available for changing into workout attire. We also have a storage area for your belongings.
What should I expect from the Introductory Private?
In order to attend a group Reformer class you will need to complete at least one introductory private during which the instructor will take the time to review your health history, discuss your fitness goals and assess/evaluate your posture and movement patterns. In addition, you will also be familiarized with the how the Reformer works and how perform basic exercises.
What am I exercising on?
Group classes at All Wellness are taught on the Reformer, the most popular of all Pilates equipment. With its system of springs, straps and pulleys, more than 100 exercises can be done, with modifications if necessary. The base of the Reformer is its gliding platform on which you can sit, kneel, stand or lie on your front, back or side. You push and pull off the foot bar using your arms, legs, wrists and ankles to side back and forth while the tension in the springs gently works your muscles. (Check out the picture of the Reformer on the “Pilates” page.)
How does scheduling work?
You may schedule with the front desk or online via our online webscheduler. All classes must be paid for in advance and do have a 6 month expiration date. We respectfully require 24 hours for all cancellations/rescheduling. Classes tend to fill quickly during certain times of the year, so we recommend signing up in advance!
Do you take insurance for Physical Therapy? How does it work?
Yes, we take most insurance plans. Since all plans are different, please call the customer service number on the back of your card and ask what your Physical Therapy benefits are. You may or may not need to obtain a referral from your primary care physician. Once these things are done you may call to schedule your initial evaluation. If you do not have insurance you may come as a cash paying client – $135 initial evaluation/$80 per session.
